Over the years, I have biked many times along our fine city’s lakefront. Yes, the natural and man-made scenery is exceptional, especially on picture-perfect days like today. But I would gladly trade that all in, along with the ever-growing crowds and chaos, for some peace and serenity. That is why today Mark and I opted instead to bike one of the Cook County Forest Preserve’s bike trails. Bikers, joggers and walkers can enjoy over 100 miles of paved bicycle trails and over 200 miles of multi-use trails in the Forest Preserve. Mark and I chose the Tinley Creek Trail System which runs through the towns of Crestwood and Orland Park. For almost ten miles, we did not have to worry about head-on collisions with other bikers, or confrontations with angry runners. It was nothing but paved trails, lush greenery, and even a centuries-old cemetery. Just off the Red Loop Trail near 135th Street and Harlem Avenue, we stumbled upon these gravesites. I thought it was kind of random and somewhat creepy but that’s not enough to keep me from using these trails again. And as long as all the city folk keep flocking to the lakefront and clogging the trails, I will have the Forest Preserve trails in the south suburbs all to myself.
